1- how long have you been writing?
I’ve been writing since I was 11 (7th grade), but there were many gaps in between years where I didn’t write at all (college, half of high school, etc). I didn’t seriously consider becoming an author or writing professionally until I was 24 (2014) and even then it took a lot of time to build up the courage to pursue that.
2- Is there a certain genre you’d like to get into?
I would love to get into every subgenre of young adult (writing everything from thrillers and fantasy to contemporary and dystopian, the sky is the limit) as well as new adult (slightly older protagonists, a bit steamier).
3- Who designed your (latest) book cover?
Deranged Doctor Designs did the covers for The Black Mage, and they did a wonderful job capturing Ryiah’s magic.
4- Where do your ideas come from?
90% music, 10% random. I picture a lot of scenes listening to music the way one might envision a music trailer for books. Sometimes it’s the beat that inspires, other times it’s the lyrics or chorus, there’s no rhyme or reason to how I get my ideas, to be honest, it just happens. My mom was a classical violinist and my family’s very artistic, so I’m sure that played a part in why music/art inspires me so much.
5- If you weren’t a writer, what would you be doing?
I’d be an accountant, I expect. I love spreadsheets and the thrill of organizing budgets. Does that sound crazy? Or some high power secretary, because I really do love making sense of super complex lists and projects.
6- Do you ever experience writer’s block? If so how do you get over it?
All the time. Usually it means I need to cut the scene I’m struggling to write (because deep down, my brain knows it’s not right) and approach a completely different way. If that doesn’t work, I take a step away from the book for a day or two. New music also helps.
7- How did you come up with your title?
Well, a “black mage” is a bit of a universal trope for video games and movies/tv. In the entertainment world, you generally assume that’s someone with powerful magic though what kind of magic depends on which game/movie/etc it is. I knew I wanted to classify my magic in factions, and that each faction would wear a different colored robe. Black is my favorite color for a robe, it just seems so powerful, and I wanted to do a classification of magic for the warrior class (“Combat”) hence the title was born… I also wanted to hint at who the story was about. You spend the whole time thinking the series title is about Ryiah becoming the Black Mage, only to discover it’s Darren, and then you realize the story is actually her struggle to save him from himself and his struggle to overcome his demons and it becomes a bit more poetic. It’s a story about power and love.
8- what is your perfect writing spot?
I’d love to say something classy, but really it’s my couch by the window, curled up in a blanket with a mug of coffee in hand.
9- What do you do in your free time?
Read. Walk. Hike. Clean (yes, I love to clean/organize, I realize that’s insane). Friends. Family. TV. And sleep, definitely sleep.
11- Do you write friends, family, or even strangers you met into your novels?
Naw. I’m not really a “people watcher” and my stories’ characters are always way too out there from people in real life but sometimes habits or character traits might find a way into a story.
12- If you were a superhero what would your name be?
Really bad at naming this kind of thing, um, if I had powers I’d want to be able to read minds so the Mind Master? Ugh. That’s really terrible. Like I said, bad with names!
Taking a spin from your story, how is “Mind Mage?”
You might just be able to wear a fancy black robe *winks* XD XD XD
